| Movie DescriptionTwo years after the events of the previous film, Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) is now head of Daley Devices, a company in New York that he founded to manufacture inventions inspired by his experiences as a museum night guard. Upon revisiting the American Museum of Natural History, he finds that the museum is preparing to close for renovations and upgrades, resulting in some of the museum pieces being replaced by interactive holograms. The actual exhibits are due to be moved to the Federal Archives at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.
The night before the exhibits are moved, Larry reconnects with his museum exhibit friends including Theodore Roosevelt (Robin Williams), Rexy the Tyrannosaurus Skeleton, and Dexter the Capuchin Monkey. Teddy tells Larry that himself, Rexy, the Easter Island head (Brad Garrett) and Ahkmanrah will remain at the American Museum of Natural History while the other exhibits will be moved to the Federal Archives. The relocated exhibits will no longer come to life since the Golden Tablet of Ahkmenrah that animated the exhibits each night will remain at the American Museum of Natural History. After seeing the rest of the exhibits shipped out, Larry doesn't know what to do for the rest of his life.
The next evening, Larry receives a call from Jedediah (Owen Wilson), saying that Dexter stole Ahkmanrah's Tablet and brought it to the Federal Archives. The evil Pharaoh Kahmunrah (Hank Azaria), Ahkmenrah's older brother, is attacking Jedediah and the other exhibits. Larry travels to Washington, D.C. and visits the National Air and Space Museum, the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian Institution Building searching for the Federal Archives with the help of his son Nick Daley (Jake Cherry).
Larry sneaks into the Archives and locates the exhibits, frozen in the middle of a battle with Kahmunrah and his troops. Kahmunrah was trying to take the tablet out of the crate from New York. Larry takes possession of the tablet just as the sun sets and all the exhibits come alive again. Kahmunrah and his soldiers lock the crate and take the Tablet from Larry. Kahmunrah tells Larry that bringing the exhibits to life is just one of the tablet's powers and that he intends to use it to conquer the world by raising an army from the underworld. Larry tries to convince Kahmunrah to give back the Tablet by telling him about the "Cube of Rubik." He leads Kahmunrah and his troops to a large box which he found earlier, opens the lock and from it escapes an "octopus," which immediately starts attacking everyone in its way, knocking over other exhibits in the process. Larry manages to run away from the Egyptian troops and escapes with the help of General George Armstrong Custer (Bill Hader).
Larry meets Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams), who is thrilled at the prospect of adventure and accompanies Larry on a journey through an assortment of paintings and photographs. Larry and Amelia trap Kahmunrah's soldiers in a photograph of V–J day in Times Square, but they are captured by Napoleon Bonaparte (Alain Chabat). Napoleon takes Larry to Kahmunrah, separating Amelia from Larry.
Meanwhile, Jedidiah and Octavius (Steve Coogan) try to help recover the Tablet, but they are found out by one of Al Capone's goons and Jedediah tells Octavius to run away while he distracts them. Jedediah is placed in a cage and taken to Kahmunrah, who tortures him. Octavius observes this and vows to save him. |
