| Movie DescriptionMary Horowitz (Sandra Bullock), crossword puzzle writer for the "Sacramento Herald" is brilliant. However, brilliance comes with a price. Despite her extreme intelligence, she is socially awkward, and considers her pet hamster her only true friend. Because she has never dated anyone, her parents decide to set her up on a blind date. Mary is not too fond of this idea, and her expectations are low. However, she was extremely surprised that her date for the evening turns out to be really hot. It was Steve Muller (Bradley Cooper), a cameraman for CCN, a local news channel. Steve is handsome and charming, and Mary is immediately smitten. However, these feelings are not reciprocated by Steve, in part because of her awkwardness. Despite this, Mary decides to pursue Steve, and is encouraged by CCN newscaster Hartman Hughes (Thomas Haden Church), who thoroughly enjoys torturing Steve. However, Mary's obsession also gets her fired when she created a crossword titled "All About Steve," containing clues that the general public would not be able to guess because they were, as the title suggests, all about Steve. Following her termination, Mary decides to tail Steve around the country in the hopes of winning his affection. Mary meets and then travels with protesters Elizabeth and Howard (Katy Mixon,DJ Qualls). Mary gradually grows close to these two, in part because of similar mannerisms (e.g. using "vamos" instead of "let's go") as well as surviving a tornado together. Following the tornado, Steve and his crew are covering a live story; an old mine collapsed with several deaf children stuck inside. The report, however, is good; all the children have been rescued. However, Mary, who is on site after a tip from Hartman, accidentally falls into the mine shaft while in pursuit of Steve. This immediately becomes the new story - but there's a twist; it turns out not all the children have been rescued, and Mary happens to find the one left behind. She finds a way out, and the two are joined by Hartman. At this point, Mary realizes she does not need Steve in order to be happy - she has real friends. She then states, "If you love someone set him free; if you have to stalk him, he probably wasn't yours in the first place." |
